Emma Purcell makes baskets, sculptural forms and cordage, mostly from willow but also from from rush and salvaged materials. She gathers some of her materials from the hedgerows and woodlands of rural East Sussex, where she is based. Everything is crafted by hand, and a basket may take several hours or even days from start to finish.
The role of baskets in the twenty-first century is somewhat niche… I see my work as attempting to preserve their place as aesthetic and functional forms, harnessing beauty, nature and craftsmanship in an age of mass-produced, disposable plastic vessels.
